Changed the hydro fluid/filters at 100hrs today in my TC33D Boomer,when I removed the old fluid it smelled "smokey, burnt".It's the 1st diesel I have owned. Tractor/fluid was still warm. Fluid was still honey colored,couldn't see any metal in filters.Replaced with 8gal. of Amsoil synth.....I was 50hrs late per New Holland,cant change that now though.Most others change hydro filters only at 100? Hope to get the lo temp squeal out with snthetic. thanks for any input.

I own a TC18 and my manual said to change filters only at 50 hours, I don't change the transmission oil until 300 hours. At 50 hours, as expected, the fluid smelled like new. I also found no chavings in either filter, I cut them open to see.

Don't know if it's related: When I had the engine on my 1/2 ton rebuilt, the shop owner told me the automatic transmission had been burnt. The fluid smells burnt. Such a thing can result from towing too heavy a trailer or up too long a grade.
He said that such a transmission could damage the engine. Having told me that, he said his warranty wouldn't cover the engine if it was damaged due to the transmission. Since his shop didn't work on transmissions, he wasn't trying to sell me another job, but maybe he had a brother-in-law. Don't know, but I had the transmission rebuilt.
Anyway, I do know that transmissions can get hot enough under high loads to surface weld the gear faces. I can't say how used HST oil should smell, but 'burnt' in automatic transmissions is not normal. I guess there is a chance the transmission was overheated and could use some attention. ....
